Food contact articles are items intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. Beside repeated use articles like cutlery, dishes and processing machines, food is mainly exposed to single use packaging.
Articles and materials used for their manufacture are subject to certain regulations ensuring their harmlessness. Major threat to human health could arise from release and migration of chemical substances in relevant quantities into food. In addition, complying with the respective provisions shall prevent the change of composition or organoleptic properties of the food.
Globally, different authorities are dealing with the risk assessment along the supply chain: In the United States, the Code of Federal Regulations Title 21 specifies appropriate requirements. In the European Union, harmonized as well as national provisions contribute to the approval and safe use. Their common base provides EU Framework Regulation (EC) 1935/2004. In addition, other trade regions differ in intention and proceeding in regulating food contact articles, for example China or Japan.
Our additives participate in a broad range of applications meant to produce food contact materials (e.g. can coatings or printing inks). Thus, the regulatory requirements on the supply chain to minimize the risk of migration of chemical substances into food directly affect BYK products.
The compliance status of BYK additives with such regulations can be found in the documents we provide for download on this website.
